Voice Searching: Learning Style From Others
Art criticism has always reflected, in my opinion, a pretentious tone, sometimes condescending to those not knowledgeable about specific artists. However, within just this semester being able to read and explore many art critics of different times and different styles has brought a whole new interest to the occupation.
I took a particular interest in “Blood and Guts” by Gary Indiana. The piece utilized a list orientation instead of an essay or article platform. The random ‘fuck you’ caught my eye right away in part 3, I enjoy it when a piece shocks the reader, it snaps your attention to continue to read. The art critic creates a shift in the ordinary. Random flips back and forth between subject matter keep it exciting without the meaning getting lost in translation.
I hope to strive to make my writing as enjoyable as possible. Enduring the odd giggle from the audience. Possibly a gasp and then a jaw-to-the-floor reaction from my work. To allow free access to my brain in whatever thoughts were roaming around while admiring or criticizing a work. Art criticism just like the art it writes about should be enjoyable yet bring a discomfort to push any audience to strive to understand more.
